The Face Behind Points for Pets

I'm Dr Katie Quinn MRCVS BVM&S (dist), I graduated from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh, in 2022. I've worked in equine and small animal practices since graduated, within a range of sectors from sports animals to family companions. Currently I work as a small animal vet in Wiltshire.

I love what I do and in particular pain management. Dogs, cats and horses are all living longer and medicine is always changing. I jumped at the chance to complete an acupuncture course with ABVA. Thereafter, I have seen the effects of acupuncture on friends and family pets and wanted to share it with others.

I offer a service which is provided within your home, upon referral from your vet, to avoid the stress of travel to and from a clinic where your pet may feel nervous at. It also means pets with mobility issues are not being made to leave the comfort of their home for treatment.

I always welcome questions and a conversation in deciding if acupuncture is right for you and your pet.

FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Insertion of a solid needle into the body for the purpose of therapy, disease preventation or maintenance of health (Working, 2003).

Will my pet feel any pain with acupuncture?

Dogs and cats will often feel a quick sharp sensation with the needle enters the skin. Thereafer, people who have acupuncture describe it a numbness or dull ache. Dogs are often easily distracted by food and cats by fuss and attention!

Horses although have an much larger area and depth of muscle are much the same in terms of sensation. Agian most can be distracted with a scratch or hay net!

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture when performed properly is very safe on dogs, cats and horses. Most side effects are local redness or local pain where the needle is inserted. If you are worried at all, I am more than happy to discuss further.

When will I see and how long are the effects of acupuncture last on my pet?

Some will see improvements after just one session! However, long lasting effects are best achieved with continuing a regime with several sessions, especially if your animal has a chronic issue.

Can my pet continue current medication?

Yes! Absolutely. Acupuncture is used as an additonal treament rather than replacement.

Who can practice acupuncture on animals?

In the UK only veterinary professionals are legally allowed to treat pets.

How do I know its right for my pet?

You don't know unless you try. Understandably this is not right for all pets, not all will relax and allow needle insertion. The first session is about geting to know you and your pet. A very small number of needles will be placed and then we can progress in each session.

Contact us

I am always open to a chat, if you are unsure if your pet would benefit from acupuncture please still reach out!

Before treatment I will require a referral from your primary vets (I will provide the form). Please note I will only be providing acupuncture, I will not change your pets current treatment regime. Your vet knows them better than me.

Your primary vet is still your first contact in the case of an emergency.
